Th’ Iron Donger

Today’s the day ....................... to bridge

This wonderful cast iron railway bridge over the Rochdale Canal near Chadderton is known locally as the ‘Iron Donger’ .

It dates from the opening of the Manchester & Leeds Railway, engineered by George Stephenson, in 1841.  This was just 37 years after the canal and no doubt hastened its demise.  Although the bridge is still in situ, it is not in use and has been superseded by a more modern structure that runs parallel to it.  

It is now a ‘listed’ structure .........................
