1974

Hi. For those that know, forgive me
For those that don’t................
In 1974 Cyprus was devastated and split apart by the island being invaded. I’ll leave all the political comments to others. Anyway we now have 3 very different areas. The Greek or Southern areas including the well know tourist areas with its amazing coastline and beaches. The Northern area (Turkish) and the buffer (UN)zone. It’s best described as one huge geography / history / political lesson. It took until 2003 for the border to open to cross into either area. Today their are regular cross borders tours so finally the whole island is open to the Braver tourist. It’s almost criminal when visiting to not see the whole island. It’s less than 100km top to bottom. We are staying in just below Famagusta (ghost town) and in less than an hour we have passed through customs are in Famagusta. The border as you can see is quite lengthy, but only has 7 crossing points. Today Famagusta is one of the key barganing points on the political table and fingers crossed the next (younger generation)will make progress and remove some of the border constraints.
