True Grit

I came across this small cotton bag the other day. It was originally for pigeon grit from Liverine Ltd of Grimsby. As a child, my wife used to keep her marbles in it – supply own joke here.

I love it. The golden age of advertising. Here are my choice bits:

In Health a Necessity. In Sickness Indispensable.

Worth a guinea an ounce

Health Grit Surpasses All Others

The peculiarities of this Grit are that it is the correct size, being larger than pinhead, sharp and angular. An effective digester of the bird’s food. A grain or two placed on the tongue will indicate it is highly medicated the result of years of practical study and experiments by the inventors. The young birds are strong, vigorous and healthy, and the old birds always fit and in condition.

All Birds eat it with Avidity

A grand Tonic & Bone Former

No Pigeon Loft Should be without it

It promotes ROBUST HEALTH, makes medicine unnecessary and gives tone and depth of colour to the plumage, without it unattainable.

Flyers will Home where this grit is used.

PS Just Googled it and Liverine are still going!
