We didn't

... visit Whitby Abbey (but I stood on tiptoe to get this blip from over the wall). Given it's ruinous condition and time pressures we didn't feel justified spending the entrance fee, and English Heritage obviously weren't keen for idle onlookers to get a great view without coughing up. So LH kept the engine idling whilst I got what scenic view I could without spending any money. It was slightly dispiriting.

Anyway, we had already done a good walk at Ravenscar, revelling in the gradual emergence of sunshine backed with a stiff breeze. Then up to Whitby for a mosey round. I love the smell of proper fishing ports - a lightish tang of sea and fish with diesel fumes as extra. We happened to catch a good, Welsh male voice choir which serenaded all those gazing at the replica ship of the 'Endeavour', as used by Captain James Cook. The ship was painted yellow and blue, which isn't at all what I'd have envisaged! We visited a museum dedicated to Cook which was sited in the house where he learnt his seamanship. What I like most was that his master was a Quaker who had old, functional furniture, built to last generations - and had, beautifully.

All the sea air has made us rather tired. Or was it the wine last night?!
