Spiral Incense

The day after the super-typhoon in Hong Kong the main roads were clear enough for my sister, nephew and me to make our way to Man Mo Temple.  My mother had mentioned that when she met my father in 1952 she was living near the temple, which is now surrounded by high rise buildings. We lit joss sticks for mum, not because she was religious but she was pragmatic and always made her offerings "just in case" with due solemnity but little fuss.
Hanging from the ceiling were enormous spirals of incense, creating a smoky fragrance above the many shrines where people added their individual incense sticks. We didn't know which shrines might be relevant, so made offerings at several. There were mainly local people so it felt very much like a little corner of old Hong Kong.
