Black and light

The streets this evening were heaving with over-excited youngsters making their way from pub to pub, some in black suits, others in little black nothings. It must be freshers' week.

This was after another concert. Sheku Kanneh-Mason again, this time playing in Schubert's Trout Quintet. It was quite different seeing him in ensemble playing rather than as a soloist - the strings had loads of fun together, all shared with the audience: impish exchanged glances, swapped grins, little games with the music, responses, especially between Sheku Kanneh-Mason and the double bassist Chi-chi Nwanoku. She is the founder of the Chineke! Orchestra, Europe's first classical orchestra made up of a majority of black and minority ethnic musicians, and she campaigns for screened auditions.

The next piece was Beethoven's septet and unusually, she was placed in the middle. I loved how she asserted the double bass as a melodic instrument.
