The kittiwakes have gone from the remains of Dunbar Castle which now shows no evidence that it was once one of the most important castles in Scotland. Much of it has collapsed into the sea and a large part was destroyed to make way for the entrance to the ‘new’ Victoria Harbour in 1844.  It is now too dangerous to visit especially after the archway collapsed into the sea in 1993.  Several times it had been attacked by the English until it was destroyed in 1567 on the orders of the Scottish Parliament after Mary Queen of Scots’ surrender and abdication because they believed that Mary’s supporters might use it to destabilise the balance of power in Scotland.
Mary had visited several times and had been brought there after being abducted in April 1567 by the Earl of Bothwell who was the Keeper of the Castle and then after their marriage the following month.  A fuller description of her link can be found here
