Metallic Blue Hover Fly

This is a New Zealand native hover fly. At a casual glance it can be mistaken for a bluebottle, but the orange trimmings give it away. The extra shot shows different angles so that among them you can see the blue abdomen, the subtle stripes on the thorax, the orange scutellum (the triangle on the back), and the matching haltere on the side. These aid the fly’s balance.
