Save the Curlew

The British curlew is in serious decline, and according to the Wetland Wildlife Trust, we have lost half of our breeding pairs in the last 20 years. This is mainly due to habitat loss and predation.

There is a curlew rescue plan in place, and groups have been working with farmers and the wider community to trial different ways of protecting nests. Electric fences have been used to deter predators, farmers have been asked to delay cutting the hay until the curlew chicks have almost fledged, and signs have been put up to educate people about the disturbance dogs can cause.

This photo was taken whilst out walking from Glasson Dock to Conder Green and back. Lovely weather today.
