Cliveden House, Buckinghamshire

Donated to the National Trust in 1942.

The first Cliveden House was built in the mid 17th century.  Much of it (except the large viewing platform in red brick) was later burnt down; today's house was rebuilt in Italianate style in the mid 19th century.

This photo of the south façade and log parterre (formal garden) was taken in the grounds, about a mile away from the house, resulting in significant foreshortening of perspective.  (The MAP gives an approximation of my standing point for the photo.)

Cliveden's grounds provides magnificent walks - especially in autumn - and are abutted by the River Thames.

Notorious as the background for the Profumo affair, the greatest (political) scandal of the 1960s.
