Winchester Cathedral Collage

Today we had a quick visit to Stanley, my stepson in Southampton - we had to detour from the A31 in Ringwood but it was a bonus as we went through the edge of the New Forest and saw lots of ponies. After coffee with Stan we decided to visit Winchester, a place neither of us had been before prompted by the excellent programme with Prof. Alice Roberts which we watched last night ‘Norman Winchester’ .
I hadn’t realised Jane Austen was buried there and I felt quite tears looking at her memorial by her family .
Alice Roberts mentioned the Diver, who at the turn of the last century saved the Cathedral from collapsing by diving underneath it . There were several memorials to him including a pub opposite named after him - William Walker.

Choral evening song was about to start whilst we were there, so we were unable to see the Crypt with it’s Anthony Gormley sound sculpture so we will definitely return . It’s a much more impressive cathedral inside than from the outside.
