Saffron

Crocus sativus, the Saffron Crocus, is cheaply available at garden centres.  The corms are usually on the small size apropos flowering but it is possible to grow your own saffron.  The bulbs need rich soil, deep planting, sun and a it of luck!  This summer we had record sunshine levels and hey presto, flowers on these bulbs that were planted several years ago and only flowered occasionally since.

A drizzly day meant indoor jobs only.  No worries, I have not been sleeping well so a quiet day was just fine.  Last talk of the year tonight, down in a little Suffolk village.  Foggy on the narrow, winding roads for the last ten miles .... maybe why there was only a small turnout.  Lacking in numbers, they made up for it in enthusiasm.  Lots of chat afterwards plus mini home-made apple pies with whipped cream - delicious :-)
