Why Rings?

On this mouldy apple? I don't know. I looked it up and was directed to Wickipedia which talked about "reaction- diffusion systems" (and possibly fairy rings). Followed by (for me) a completely incomprehensible equation. So I have given up - someone out there will know the answer (in simple terms)
