Summer's Last Hurrah

Still afternoon, but shadows' length
hints that autumn's gaining strength

despite the cloudless sky, and seas
that barely stir without a breeze.

And while small butterflies still dance,
like summer, we will take the chance

to linger, though it's growing late,
and gaze beyond the five-bar gate

across the headland, there to catch
a glimpse of blue: one poignant patch.
