Through The Arched Window

This section of Hertford Castle’s stone and flint wall is seven feet thick and was constructed when King Henry II wanted to strengthen defenses in 1170-1174. Later repairs are clearly red brick. The wall is noted as much for its ecological as well as historical interest as it supports lichens, mosses and a few flowering plants.

To the left is the early C14 Postern Gate with the octagonal corner tower also constructed of stone and flint.
