Growing old disgracefully

ROVERING TO SUCESS

The Professor has been purging his bookshelves.  This one, the sequel to Scouting for Boys by Baden Powell (1930),  is a treasure. The chapter on 'women' is particularly precious.

I picked up our favourite ten year old from school today.   He asked his teacher to tell me there is no homework this week, as  'Granny might not believe me'  - he has cried wolf about homework now and then!  I am glad it is a homework free week. Pupils, teachers and parents largely don't believe in it,  the evidence suggests its counterproductive,  but we don't appear to have the courage to abandon it.  I've been in education all my life and I have yet to grasp why we continue to value this tradition.
