Armistice Day

Today comemorates the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One. I consider myself very fortunate to have never had to contemplate the true horror of the wars that the world faced in the first half of the last century.

I took a walk to the graveyard in our village. The church was demolished in 1959, but as you would expect the Commonwealth War Graves Commission still maintains the two war graves in the graveyard.

This grave is for William Elliott, private, 166th Company, Labour Corps. Army no. 99146. He was formerly with The Devonshire Regiment. Army no. 52649
He died on 28 October 1918. He was 32.
He was the son of William and Betsy Elliott of Fewcott.

To have died so close to the end of the war must have been a wrench for the family and friends he left behind, he gave his today for all our tomorrows, for which we can never express our gratitude enough.
