The Gazweasel Times

Tick tock

There's a number of alms houses in Farnham. This one has two, rather attractive (and accurate) sundials on the wall. It's the McDonalds Alms Houses and has nothing to do with clowns or tasteless fast food that somehow keeps kids quiet while providing nothing in the way of nourishment.

They were designed by architect Arthur Stedman who was educated, lived and died in Farnham. They were endowed by George McDonald, a manufacturer of sacks and tarpaulin at his factory in West Street.

Interestingly, most references I have found for his name spell it MacDonald but the original sign on the front of the building is McDonald. Make of that, what you will.

I think the motto is a bit harsh for an alms house.
