Last Day on the Heaphy

We did get some rain today, our 4th day, but it was only showery, and made for moody photos! The waves were pounding on the beaches, and we could hear boulders rolling around.

The nikau palms were still prolific, but taller and quite spindly. We'd been told about the large snails that are endemic to the area but we weren't lucky enough to spot any.

We had to cross quite a few rivers today, but all of them were bridged, which the early visitors to the area never experienced. I've put 2 photos of bridge crossings into Extras - the 2nd one was only a wire bridge and a little tricky.

It was raining when we arrived at Kohaihai Bluffs, and so it was a quick change in a welcome shelter, and then into our waiting vehicle, and on to the little town of Karamea.
