Building Sn3 and N Worlds

Next project - freight yard buildings

Yesterday and today I got out the various building kits I need to make in order to complete my freight yard on the Sn3 layout.  The extra blip shows where I think they will all go.  From bottom to top there will be a yard office by the yard troat and a phone booth(not shown) for train crews to call/telegraph in.  Further down the siding, there will be, in order, a storage boxcar, a motor or speeder (pop car) house with tool house addition, a coal shed, and finally a crew bunkhouse.  Naturally there will be lots of junk, rail, ties, weeds, etc around the buildings and lots of dirt.

All of the kits, save the one in the box, are resin castings.  These were originally done in Sn3 scale by Design-Tech, long out of business.  They have excellent detail - door hinges, door knobs, etc, etc.  They are cast exactly right.  They are laid out on the paper towels because I washed each part to get rid of the mold release material which prevents good gluing adhesion, and later, paint sticking.  Worth the trouble as the detail is really good. One hint - wash with warmish water to prevent the parts warping.

The kit in the box is the crew bunkhouse and is a wood craftsman kit - laser cut walls, details, etc.  A fun and excellent kit by Crystal River Products - also retired.  Most of these kits I have had for 10-15 plus years - something I learned in N scale.  If you see something you want for a future spot on the layout, buy it now cause it will be gone later.
