Hill Gates

Kyoto was super-busy so me and S had to lug our bags around all day. Good practice for the Himalayas, in the words of S. We went to a hill called Fushima inari, which is devoted to a fox god (of sake), and covered in 10,000 orange torii. Each one is replaced every 10 years of so, by a business hoping for success, who leave their kanji upon it. Very cool. but difficult to photograph. Most impressive is just walking for long periods of time under a bright orange sun dappled ceiling, wondering for how long it can continue.

Bye Barbara
