Blossom Flies

These insects are endemic to New Zealand, but their relatives in the Northern Hemisphere are called March flies. The female is larger and more colourful than the male. Her face is longer, while his is taken up mostly by his big eyes. They are good pollinators.

Some people call them love bugs because of their mating behaviour. They remain coupled for hours. The female continues feeding while the male dangles behind her.
