Sgwarnog: In the Field

Modest

If I'd been a bit more alert I might have shared this on the centenary.

Both remarkable and unremarkable, there are modest memorials like this tucked away in the corner of most graveyards that I visit.

Notable for me in this inscription are the terrible vagueness of the place of death (missing not just "Somewhere in France", but "Somewhere in France or Belgium") and the fact that 2nd Lieut JCW Halliday served in the first few months of the Royal Air Force. The RAF replaced the (Army) Royal Flying Corps only in April 1918.
