Powie's Path weir

The barber shop was shut in Mid Calder today so I went for a wander along the river instead. The phone place identifying thing said this spot is Powie's Path. A quick search said that excavations here years ago uncovered human remains, stone coffins, and a sword. Some ancient battle perhaps? A strategic crossing? It also suggests Powie means Skull, but in old scots, pow seems to generally means a pool and other watery related stuff.
