After checking out of the hotel I took a short detour via Seaham to see Tommy, the WW1 statue pictured above.  It has been located next to the war memorial in Seaham since a group of local residents raised the 
£102 000 to buy it.  It is made of corteen steel and made by artist Ray Lonsdale and some more information about it can be read here and here.  It is a very moving tribute and the pictures cannot quite capture the emotion felt when seeing it in reality.
