The protesters we saw were very peaceful, walking through the streets of Paris to make their point, waving to passers-by,

Then we saw more riot-ready police vans than you would believe possible in one city - with some parking up so that the officers could relieve themselves at the side of the road.

The news coverage and continued sirens throughout the evening seemed to tell a much more violent story - which, it appears, had the desired effect on the fuel tax. An exciting day to be in Paris.
