Red Sky

Red sky at night, shepherds delight
Red sky at morning, shepherds warning.
If you believe the old saying that is. I've always thought it was shepherds at night and sailors in the morning, but there again, Beloved says my mind is on the blink. If you look on the Met Office web site, it's shepherds, but according to the American Library of Congress it's sailors.
Whichever you read, both agree that the saying comes from the Bible, Matthew 16: 2-3, Jesus said, “When in evening, ye say, it will be fair weather: For the sky is red. And in the morning, it will be foul weather today; for the sky is red and lowering.”
Whilst Shakespeare wrote “Like a red morn that ever yet betokened, Wreck to the seaman, tempest to the field, Sorrow to the shepherds, woe unto the birds, Gusts and foul flaws to herdmen and to herds."

Whichever version you believe, if you do that is, there does appear to be some truth in it.
