Franz Josef Glacier, located in the Southern Alps.

The Franz Josef glacier is one of many situated on the western side of the Southern Alps.
As a result of global warming this glacier has receded in length by more than 1,000 metres over the last 15 to 20 years.
The annual rainfall in this area is in excess of 5 metres per annum resulting in many large waterfalls cascading down the mountainside.
