Happy Day

Today was our second day providing Level 1 of the Girlguiding Walking Scheme to a keen little group. This is essentially lowland navigation with Girlguiding regulations and a bit of outdoor first aid thrown in.

Feedback from the trainees was excellent and everyone learned something, including Verity & me, which is how it should be. This was the first course I’d organised locally and the first time we’d run one on our own so a great result. Happy day.

Interestingly one of our candidates said she had number dyslexia. This is not something I’d come across before but she struggled not only with the concept of numbers, and units of distances, but was also unable to remember numbers sufficiently to count her paces for 100m. By the third attempt however, not in the least bit phased, she’d found herself a work around, which was to raise a finger each time she got to 20. She struggled to use the timing card too so I’m making her a simple set with only one speed on each card and each card being printed in a different colour. Where there’s a will there’s a way.

Finally, a very quick turnaround from chilly first aid role play in muddy boots took me to a black tie rugby dinner in a dress and high heels :-)
