A fungi trail

Walking through the churchyard this morning (yes, it was raining) I found these large fungi growing along the grassy pathway.
Why are they growing in this formation??
Another busy day wrapping, labelling and packing up presents, writing the very last cards - and wiping Copper’s muddy paws!!
