Deal Cottages - One Street #2

These 19th century dock workers' cottages are home to the Bristol Adventure Sea Cadets and are along the same quay from the Old Dock Cottages shown yesterday. You can see some of their boats in the foreground inlet which used to be a lock but was closed up in the war in case of bombing. Inside is a replica of a shore based ship. Do look at the map for they are on an island jutting into the Docks.

They are not only used by the Sea Cadets but because the 6 cottages (there are 3 on the back, see blipfolio) have been joined up into one building they form a maze of passages and rooms where most weeks Police sniffer dogs come to be trained or practice detection of explosives/guns/drugs/people/people's possessions that are hidden in the building or on the quayside.

One dog that you can see in the blipfolio is coming to the end of his working life of 8 years and is due to be re-homed. His handler is looking for someone with enough land so he won't need walking and said 'he doesn't like other dogs and probably would chase sheep given the chance!'

The Bristol Adventure Sea Cadets are part of the UK 's largest maritime youth charity that was established in 1856 and works across the country in 400 towns with 14000 Sea Cadets between 10 - 18. Cadets are taught vital life skills like leadership and team working via nautical adventure activities and can earn extra qualification which help boost confidence and give young people a head start in life.

Sailing, canoeing, abseiling, learning about first aid and communications, rock climbing, shooting, power boating, field craft, weapons training, map reading and drill are included in their activities. (I think I would like to join!) It is the centre for the West Country Sea Cadets' water based competitions when hoarse adolescent voices scream encouragement for their rowing teams competing in the Docks
