Greater Spotted Woodpecker

This fellow took me by surprise, it was during a stay near Kirkcudbright that he appeared. We always feed the birds when we're away, even if there is plenty of wild food, we like to attract them where we can see them more clearly.

I grabbed the wife's camera (it has a greater zoom than mine) and got this shot, of course I've not heard the end of 'my camera must be better than yours' etc.

This visit we'd seen large numbers of blue tits, great tits, bearded tits and various finches but we've not come across him before, not in this area and we've been visiting for nearly 10 years.
