Looking out to sea

Lowestoft Lifeboat Station was one of the earliest in the UK, founded in 1801, twenty three years before the RNLI came into being. This chap stands on the wrong side of the bascule bridge (no I did not know what one was either!) looking out to sea, a memorial to all Lowestoft lifeboatmen.

Bascule bridge? Think Tower Bridge, London but without the towers! It's a moveable bridge with a counterweight that continuously balances the span throughout the entire upward swing, providing clearance for boat traffic.
