Little Egret Does The Hokey Cokey

"You put your left leg in, your left leg out In, out, in, out, you shake it all about You do the Hokey Cokey and you turn around That's what it's all about."

A walk in poor light at Amwell Nature Reserve. We watched this little egret striding then stirring with its yellow feet. The stirring action flushes small fish and invertebrates out of the mud so that the sharp-eyed bird can strike at them. It is thought that the yellow feet aid this process, being more obvious to potential prey than dark feet would be in sediment-filled water.
