Grave robbers

I always take a certain macabre pleasure in pointing out to visitors from “south of the border” this octagonal watchtower in Callander graveyard.

It’s where men guarded the graves of the recently buried.

For creepy businessmen had discovered a lucrative trade in digging up corpses to sell to medical schools especially during the heyday between 1820 to 1830 when new advances in medicine were being made and there was a shortage of fresh bodies.

These ressurrectionists were only too happy to provide “material” for anatomy classes, much to the consternation of the recently bereaved.
