Mango seeds

13th January 2019:

Just as we distribute 15,000 mango seedlings to villages, for planting,
to  help improve the diet of the poorest rural people imaginable, the whole process begins again.

Here the team has collected mango seeds for planting, for the 2020 season.

These local mango, shown here, are planted in the garden to produce new root-stock. they produce up to three shoots which will then be putted into plastic tubes. When the shoot is about pencil thick, the tubes are moved to the greenhouses where improved scions of 10 varieties are grafted on by our amazing workers who have become experts at the process (with no formal training).
So much so that the Graduates from the local Government Research Station visited to see how they achieved their success rates.
This horticulture area has the highest rating with ICRAF, (The World Agroforestry Centre.

Since Mary is from Mayo we painted the lorry in the county colours, but it made no difference to their performance!!
