This is the Cocoon in the Darwin Centre (the new wing of the Natural History Museum). The Cocoon is the public facing part of the wing, although there are lots of windows so that visitors can see what is going on "behind the scenes" in various other parts of the wing. It was looking rather dramatic this afternoon: the crisp, wintery light was flooding through the huge glass wall of the atrium casting these superbly sharp shadows. The cocoon and its atrium are great for shadows when there is directional light: I love the way that the straight shadows (from the huge steel pillars and window frames) play over the curved shape of the cocoon, accentuating the contrast between the geometric atrium and almost organic cocoon...
