Cooking up a storm!

A sea day, through the Drake Passage from the Antartica Peninsula to Tierra del Fuego. Very few seabirds, a bit of a storm had just passed though and another one was on the way.  The seas got steadily heavier through the day with 4 or 5 metre waves towards the evening. Unfortunately our northerly course meant the waves were coming at us from the port side and not straight on. At about 6pm I was sitting in the lounge on the 3rd deck when the ship lurched, I nearly fell out of the chair and I got drenched when a wave smashed through the window behind me. Needless to say they cleared the lounge after that and closed all the porthole covers!  The wind didn't seem that strong, maybe 40 knots, but the waves were coming almost side on. The 3rd deck must be at least 30 feet above sea level so the wave that hit was probably about 35 feet, or maybe more. It must have broken just as it hit. We had a rather bumpy night, the dishes and glasses were sliding around on the table a bit at dinner and a few dishes got broken, but the staff continued to serve as though it was nothing out of the ordinary. The only difference was that there were no long stemmed glasses for the wine, just thick bottomed ones. So today's post is of waves breaking over the bow of the ship. This was taken from the 4th deck in the early afternoon just as things were building up.
