Brains and shadows

Whilst wandering aimlessly this afternoon I came across the gruesome sight of a piece of brain on a dead tree. 
Luckily, there hadn't been a murder it was but a fungus. The yellow brain jelly fungus Tremella mesenterica, also commonly known as the golden jelly fungus, yellow trembler, and witches' butter, is a common jelly fungus found on dead or dying wood. It is bright yellow when young but turns dark orange as it ages. Although the fungus looks as if it is feeding on the dead wood it is in fact a parasite on another fungus, usually a species of Peniophora, which itself breaks down the dead wood for a living.
