Slipper Mill Pond

We went to Chichester today. Thought we would see the Christmas market there and wander around the shops. A few bits for Christmas were acquired and we had a late lunch in a little cafe. The cafe has a piano with a sign saying please play me and while we ate one of the owners came and played for a while. After a few minutes he went away and he sent over one of the waitresses and she was excellent; it made such a change from piped musak or corny Christmas songs.
We then went over to Emsworth. The village lies at the north end of an arm of Chichester Harbour, a large but shallow inlet of the English Channel. It was very still so no eau de sea smells on the wind, rather a shame really but we had a pleasant walk around the Slipper Mill Pond.
The pond was built in the 1760s to provide power to drive the Slipper Mill. The gates are pushed open as the tide rises and close as it turns holding back the sea water which, in the past, powered the Mill. The combination of sea and fresh water provides a unique brackish water environment which has been recognised as a 'Site of Nature Conservation Interest' and home to many special species.
I took quite a few photos around Chichester but I liked this one the best. It is a post in the Slipper Mill Pond. The sign it carried is long gone and it is no longer upright. I love the colour from the setting sun, the stillness of the water providing a beautiful reflection.
