Whimsical trees

Wonder why this small stretch of trees has been planted here?  High on a moorland road above Skyreholme, they're unlikely to do well - the weather will batter them.  I can't recall seeing similar planting.  They're not obviously going to shelter anything, or soak up groundwater.  Curious ...
