Survivor

Here is the rare wild variety of Maidenhair Fern ( Adiantum capillus-veneris). As you can see it is surviving what winter can throw at it.
There are only five places in North West England where it can be found. It is very choosey about the conditions in which it will grow. It needs Tufa rock coastal cliffs with water constantly trickling down them from a spring above. That is why there is ice. It also survives salt spray and it survived the drought last summer although it did not like it.

Efforts are being made to find other suitable sites and to plant seedlings in order to increase its survival chances.
