Traditional houses

These little thatched houses used to be the standard dwelling on Madeira, but there are very few left. They are way too small for modern-day living. The plant in the foreground grows commonly in the island and is mostly in full flower now (1st February!) along with other summer plants like morning glory, cosmos, lantana, pelargoniums etc. I think it's called helicornia or strelitsia.
