A frosty start this morning. This is one of the oldest oak trees (450-500 years old) in Markstakes Common where I run one of my butterfly transect surveys. In recent years I've always recorded Purple Emperor butterflies here but not in 2018. I've just finished writing up the results of the survey - it was the second worst year on record with sightings down by 31% on the previous year.
