Land Of Discovery

Another day in Dundee and today our goal was the RRS Discovery, if not so good weather, but it wasn't raining. The Discovery has been in Dundee since 1986, a year or so after Mrs C and myself scarpered south, and is now located next to the V&A.

It was built in 1901 in Dundee specifically for scientific missions, including to Antarctica with Captain Scott although not his ill-fated mission. It was powered by both wind and coal/steam for when wind was low or they were tip-toeing around ice sheets. It's last mission ended in 1931 where it stayed in London until 1986. In 1979 she was almost used for target practice rather than find money to restore her!! The exhibition and tour around the ship was very interesting, you could probably do it and the V&A in one day.

Before heading to the Discovery, we walked past an old Lightship (waiting for funds to restore it) and the HMS Unicorn (1824) which has a roof and has never had sails.

If you look closely, you might see a recreation of Jack & Rose's Titanic King of the World!
