Lych Gate, Holy Trinity Church, Hatton

This wobbly old lych gate stands at the entrance to Holy Trinity Church, Hatton. A lych gate is a gateway covered with a roof found at the entrance to a church. It gets its name from the old English word 'lic' which means 'corpse' and it is the place where bodies were traditionally transferred to a bier as they arrived at the church. The first part of the funeral service used to be conducted at the lych gate before continuing inside the church or at the graveside.
