Gothic Revival

The latest gothic revival was both good and bad to him. He and his daughter were employed by the owners of a genuine gothic mansion. He rattled chains and moved things while the visitors weren’t looking. The guides and employees invariably denied hearing or seeing anything. Meanwhile, his daughter wore Victorian nightdresses and appeared, pale-faced, behind high, barred windows. When important guests were in residence, she would sometimes flit past open doorways or across darkened corridors.

Unfortunately, she flitted past one open doorway which opened onto a room containing a particularly important guest whose status justified the employment of personal assistants possessing both remarkable reflexes and automatic pistols. One of whom, catching the suspiciously flitting shape in the corner of his eye, managed to put two bullets between the eyes of a surprised-looking Victorian ghost.

His daughter had had a strong work ethic and so he should not have been surprised when, after a suitable break to allow for mourning etc, she carried on with her haunting - refusing to let being dead stand in her way. It took quite a bit of arguing but, eventually, his employers were persuaded to continue paying her salary on the grounds that, if anything, she was doing her job better now than she had before.
