In The Occupied Territory

When I was a boy

Day 10 and the challenge is childhood memory.
Well this is Castle Street, and on Friday evenings, we would walk down here on the way to the Beach Baths. The baths was a large, red bricked , Victorian building which contained a sea water swimming pool. The water was always cold. The changing facilities was set on the upper floor and consisted of one long curtain that stretched the length of the pool. Girls at one side and boys at the other.
If you paid extra you could use a private cubicle by the side of the pool.
On our way back we would stop at Knowles fruit shop at the top of Justice Street and by end of day fruit and, more often than not, a luxurious pomegranate to eat on the bus on the way home. We would pick the edible seeds out with a pun.
The swimming pool closed for good in 1972and was demolished.
