Friendly giraffe

We picked up the hire car, loaded suitcases and food supplies, and set off "up country".

Our first stop was only just outside Cape Town, at a butterfly place.  In fact, the butterflies were just a very small part of it; the main focus for the place was on rescuing animals and birds whose private owners had been unable to care for them or give them the attention they needed.  So, lots of parrots and canaries, reptiles such as bearded dragons and tortoise.  And loads of guinea pigs!

Then we continued on to Franschhoek.  This area has a thriving wine industry, and this is a tourist town.  Rather liked this seat giraffe.  In extras, a view of the church with the hills towering behind.  

After a nice lunch at The Village Tart we drove over the Franschhoek pass.  Everything is very dry.  We drove along the side of the reservoir created by the Theewaterskloof Dam, and the water level was really low.  At one point, there was a wildfire burning, being fought by helicopter as well as on land.  

We had downloaded a Google map of the area onto my tablet, and I was amazed to find that whilst driving in the car the tablet knew where it was - presumably it has GPS.  Very useful.  

We're now in Bonnievale for several nights, in a lovely self-catering flat.  A visit to a wine farm has to be in the plans for the next day or two.
