"Somethin' Fishy"

I'm in the process of transferring this little record of my late husband John's adventurous life into a free eBook online.  In the meantime while re-editing, thought I would share a few of the many short stories with you here.

4. BURIED TREASURES! 1940

Word on the bush telegraph traveled fast when the mullet were running to sea and fishermen from all around rallied to nearby MacMasters Beach to try to supplement their diets with fresh protein! A small boy from Bombi tagged along, by now idolising his new ‘step-father’ Tom, the only father figure he had ever known, his own father having died when he was 4.

Swarthy and as rustic as the surroundings, Tom’s deeply tanned lined face turned to young John. “Now she’s a hot day, son – so as we catch fish,I want you to put ‘em somewhere cool, fast!”
Eager to please, the snowy haired kid obeyed –pleased with himself as he thought of the ideal solution! Somewhere cool? In the wet sand of course!

The fishermen were far too engrossed in jagging their mullet to noticewhere Johnny was stashing their catch. Carefully embalmed in wet sand, the incoming tide soon washed away traces of their burial sites!
Despite frantic and desperate digging, the poor exhausted fishermen recovered only about half of their hard won catch!
